NPB leaderboards (June 13): Swallows 1B climbs among HR leaders with interleague tear

Nippon-Ham Fighters first baseman Sho Nakata homered Saturday against the Yokohama BayStars, making him the first player in NPB to hit 20 HR this season. The Yakult Swallows’ Kazuhiro Hatakeyama went on a 9-HR tear during interleague play to climb into a second-place tie with the Seibu Lions’ Takeya Nakamura (18 HR).

There are 14 players in the double digits in HRs:

The Rakuten Golden Eagles have struggled to get out fifth place in the Pacific, though they won four straight this week including a home sweep of the Yokohama DeNA BayStars. One of the bright spots for the Sendai-based club has been 19-year-old closer Yuki Matsui. The left-hander has 16 saves with an 0.55 ERA and 1.87 FIP in 33 innings pitched. His 38% strikeout rate is the second highest in Nippon Professional Baseball among pitchers with at least 20 innings pitched (SoftBank Hawks closer Dennis Sarfate is tops at 43.4%). In high school, Matsui struck out 22 batters in a 2012 national tournament game and then 19 more in another game at Koshien Stadium a week later. The following year, he was a first-round pick by the Eagles in Japan’s professional baseball draft. He made his NPB debut last season.

In four games this week, Matsui struck out 9 batters, allowing 1 hit, 2 walks and no runs in four innings of work.

Twelve pitchers with at least 20 innings pitched have struck out 27% or more of the batters they’ve faced:
