Japan batting and pitching leaderboards (through May 30)

Interleague play began on Tuesday in Nippon Professional Baseball and most teams in the Central and Pacific leagues have passed the 50-game mark. Players have accumulated enough plate appearances and innings pitched to give us meaningful batting and pitching numbers to look at.

Left fielder Yoshitomo Tsutsugo of the CL-leading Yokohama DeNA BayStars is the top hitter in Japan through Saturday’s games, based on his 194 wRC+ (.456 wOBA). Tsutsugo doesn’t turn 24 until late November. Without adjusting for league and park, Chiba Lotte Marines right fielder Ikuhiro Kiyota leads all NPB hitters with a .489 wOBA (192 wRC+). Kiyota is 29 years old. Nippon-Ham Fighters first baseman Sho Nakata leads the home run race with 18. The 26-year-old is hitting one out every 12.3 plate appearances. That’s just a bit off the pace of Major League Baseball leaders Bryce Harper (11.4 PA/HR) and Nelson Cruz (11.5 PA/HR), who also have 18 HR.

Nakata’s teammate Shohei Otani is the most dominate pitcher in either league. Otani, a right-hander who is a little more than a month shy of his 21st birthday, has struck out nearly 32% of the batters he’s faced and hasn’t given up a home run in 56 2/3 innings pitched. He has a 1.75 ERA and leads NPB with a 1.30 FIP. Otani and Nakata have helped lead the Fighters to first place in the Pacific League.

Below are batting stats for all qualifying hitters, followed by rate-based numbers for pitchers with at least 51 IP.
